Modal verbs

Wat zijn het?

*Dit zijn hulpwerkwoorden die je gebruikt om iets specifieks aan te geven, zoals mogelijkheid, toestemming, verplichting of advies. 

*Ze maken je zinnen krachtiger en preciezer. (can, must, en should) 

De belangrijkste modal verbs en hun functies 

*Obligation 

Must/mustn't/Have to/ don't & doesn't have to 

You must wear a helmet. I have to go now.  

*Permission or possibility

Can/can't/Could/couldn't

I can play football. Could you help me? 

May/Might (not)

You may leave early.  It might rain later.

*Recommendation 

Should/shouldn't 

You should study for the test.

kenmerken modal verbs

* Werkwoorden die altijd samen met een ander werkwoord worden gebruikt. 

* Ze veranderen de betekenis van dat werkwoord. 

* veranderen niet in de derde persoon enkelvoud. (dus je zegt bijvoorbeeld he can, en niet he cans) 

*Ze worden ook niet gevolgd door 'to', maar direct door een ander werkwoord in de basisvorm. Bijvoorbeeld: I can swim.
