5.5 Feudalism and the Manorial system

• understand how the Manorial system worked.

Feudal system

• Started by the Franks
•  System of higher nobles giving lesser nobles a piece of land.
• In return they give a pledge of fealty to their lord.

Knights

• =fighter on a horse (lower noble).
• Some knights had their own land but many fought in the armies of higher nobles.

Manor

• =Large piece of land.
•  Two parts: land of the lord and land of the farmers
• Manor= Domain
• Together this is called the Manorial system.

Serfs

• Belongs to the domain.
• If the lord sells the land or gives it away, the serfs is as well.

• A serf is not allowed to:
• Leave the domain without permission.
• Marry without approval of the lord.
