  • Started by the Franks
  •  System of higher lord giving lesser lords (nobles) a piece of land = a fief.
  • In return the lesser lord gives a pledge of fealty to his lord.

  • Some knights were vassals of a land and got a fief. Other lived in their castles and fought in their armies.

  • =Large piece of adjoining land.
  •  Two parts: land of the lord and land of the farmers
  • Manor= Domain
  • Together this is called the Manorial system.
