Grammar: Comparisons: trappen van vergelijking

Om in het Engels dingen met elkaar te vergelijken, gebruik je:

-  de stellende trap (POSITIVE DEGREE)

-  de vergrotende trap (COMPARATIVE) of

-   de overtreffende trap (SUPERLATIVE)

COMPARATIVE:

adjective +ER

(smart - smarter)

Vaak wordt het woord gevolgd door THAN

Frank is taller than Rob.

SUPERLATIVE:

adjective+EST

(smart - smartest)

Vaak komt er voor het woord THE te staan

Rob is the tallest boy I know.

Woorden van 3 of meer lettergrepen

krijgen GEEN -er of -est,

maar MORE of MOST ervoor!

I am smaller than Frank, 

but he is more intelligent than I am.

Jason is the sweetest baby I know, Jasmin is

COMPARATIVE and SUPERLATIVE: spelling

regular forms:

* ending in -e:

nice - nicer - nicest
* one stressed vowel + one consonant:

big - bigger - biggest

* consonant + y —>ie

healthy -healthier - healthiest

Irregular forms:
