Getting pregnant: fertilization

• fertilization in fertile period
• ovum = 24 hours fertile
• sperm cells = up to 7 days fertile
• zygote = fertilized ovum
• approximately 5-7 days till implantation
• nutrition of zygote comes from storage
• mother provides nutrition after implantation

Pregnancy 

• 3 Trimester ( tri = three; mes = month)

• Embryo produces hCG --> mother keeps producing progesteron
• Progesteron prevents menstruation

Delivery / Labour

• contraction phase
• oxytocin causes muscles in uterus wall to contract
• goal: cervix flattens and opens up
• dilation
• expulsion phase: contractions force mother to push the baby out
• afterbirth: placenta and amniotic sac are expelled from the uterus
