Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Types of combustion
With a combustion you can get different types of reaction products, dependent on the amounts of oxygen and the combustable material itself.

When there is enough oxygen you are going to get a complete combustion.

When there is a low / insufficient amount of oxygen you are going to get a partial or incomplete combustion and you will get different reaction products

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

Combustion products
You are going to get combinations of the elements that made up your combustable material together with oxygen.
Most of the substances that we burn are hydrocarbons, which exist of carbon and hydrogen. The combustion products that get formed are then the combinations that carbon and oxygen make (CO2) and the combination that hydrogen and oxygen make (H2O)

Which substances could be formed with the combustion of sulfur

Slide 4 - Open vraag

Which substances could be formed with the combustion or rubber (a compound of carbon, hydrogen and sulfur)

Slide 5 - Open vraag

Products of incomplete combustion
When an incomplete combustion happens it is due to a low amount of oxygen, then the oxygen is used in a different way (also a different ratio) in the combustion, because there are other substances formed. With incomplete combustions it can also be quite difficult (sometimes impossible) to balance the equation. Incomplete combustions of hydrocarbons can form H2O, CO2, CO and C

Substance indicators
In chemistry there are several ways to identify a substancce, one of which is using substance indicators. With a reaction with a substance indicator something specific will happen which it only does with reactions with one substance. With this you can test for all sorts of substances (corona tests, pregnancy tests, tests for drinking water etc.)
