We use adjectives after some verbs:
to be, to smell, to sound, to look, to feel
I am quiet (not: quietly). That sounds beautiful (not: beautifully). It smells delicious (not deliciously).

So an adverb says something about a verb:
He sang beautifully
But it can also say something about an adjective:
A really big car.

So, an adverb can tell us something about a verb or an adjective, but also about an adverb.
He plays well. (well tells us about the way he plays)
He plays extremely well. (extremely tells us something about well)
