Ugye láttuk, hogy a szótárban ezt a bizonyos to alakot használjuk, amit magyarra -ni végződésként fordítunk.

Ez a szerkezet arra való, hogy két igeszerűség elférjen egymás mellett egy mondatban -hiszen két állítmányunk nem lehet. Ilyenkor az egyiket "lefokozzuk" egy főnévi igenévvé, és már elférnek, így:

Zsani szeret főzni. = Zsani likes to cook.

Cooking

Figyeljünk, hogy az alábbi kettő mondat nem ugyanaz:

I like running. VAGY I like to run.

Fordítani kb így kell őket: Szeretem a futást. VAGY Szeretek futni.

A szabály az, hogy ha kedvtelésből tesszük, akkor -ing alak van, ha nem, akkor főnévi igenév.

Nem szeretek tanulni.
