Onderdelen in deze les

Today
  • discuss: answers Worbook 1, lesson 1
  • do: Workbook 1, lesson 2

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Discuss answers...
  • bespreken van een aantal vragen uit het werkboek;
pas je antwoord aan als je dat wilt.

  • wat zijn de kardinale deugden?
  • wat is rechtvaardigheid?

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

What's a dilemma?
  • Een (ethisch) dilemma is: een keuze moeten maken tussen twee lastige alternatieven.  Wat is de goede en wat is de verkeerde keuze?
  • Eigenlijk is het een soort kiezen uit twee kwaden.

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

The doctor's dilemma
Imagine you are a doctor and you have five patients who all need transplants in order to live. Two require one lung, another two require a kidney and the fifth needs a heart.
In the next ward are some individuals recovering from a broken leg and other bone problems. But other than their broken bones, they’re perfectly healthy.

Would you kill the healthy patient and harvest their organs to save five others?

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

The 'tram track' dilemma (1)

Imagine you are standing beside some tram tracks. In the distance, you spot a runaway trolley hurtling down the tracks towards five workers who cannot hear it coming. Even if they do spot it, they won’t be able to move out of the way in time.

As this disaster looms, you glance down and see a lever connected to the tracks. You realise that if you pull the lever, the tram will be diverted down a second set of tracks away from the five unsuspecting workers.

However, down this side track is one lone worker, just as oblivious as his colleagues.

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

Would you pull the lever, saving five but killing one?
A
yes
B
no

Slide 6 - Quizvraag

The 'footbridge dilemma'
Consider the second variation of this dilemma. Imagine you are standing on a footbridge above the tram tracks. You can see the runaway trolley hurtling towards the five unsuspecting workers, but there’s no lever to divert it. However, there is a large man standing next to you on the footbridge.

You’re sure that his bulk would stop the tram in its tracks.

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

Would you push the man, sacrificing him in order to stop the tram and thereby saving five others?
A
yes
B
no

Slide 8 - Quizvraag

Now watch a film
  • Are people inconsistent when they decide to pull the lever but to not sacrifice the man? Why? Why not?
Discuss with a classmate. Share your answer in a minute.
  • You may want to write down your answer in your workbook as well.

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

How about this one?

According to Dan Patrick “lots of grandparents” are willing to sacrifice themselves for the cause. Watch the
News item.

What do you agree with?
