French society 18th century
The french were divided in three groups, called estates.
  1. First estate: Clergy, the church.
  2. Second estate: Nobility, the nobles and the king.
  3. Third estate: The others, farmers, people in the cities even whealty traders. (97% of the population)

3rd estate
  • The 3rd estate payed alle the taxes.
  • They did not have representation in government.
  • In the years 1788-1789 the harvest was low.

Marie Antoinette

  • She was an Austrian princess.
  • To form an alliance with the French, she got engaged with King Louis XVI. 
  • She married by proxy, and after a weeks she met her husband for real.
  • She loved to party and spend money, even on a miniature farm in the palace garden of Versailles.

  • Made France bankrupt.
  • Waged wars and spend too much on parties.
  • He needed to in 1789 raise taxes, so he called the estates-general together for the first time in more than 200 years.
