Adjectives and adverbs
Words to give extra information.
They are similar, but then again different.

Adjectives
Adjectives are used to add information to nouns (people / things).

For example:
  • the old man / The man is old.
  • the young girl / The girl was young.
  • the stupid dog / The dog has always been stupid.

  • Often used before the noun, or in a sentence with a form of the verb to be.

Adjectives
Adjectives are used to add information to verbs of sense 

For example:
  • This dish smells great.
  • This fabric feels fantastic.
  • That man looks weird.

  • Be careful, we do this when we talk about how something smells, feels, looks, sound, etc.
    If someone does something actively, we use an adverb.
    He looked at the painting carefully. (It's not about how it looks, but the manner the person is doing it)

Adverbs
Adverbs are used to add information to verbs, adjectives, other adverbs or clauses.

For example:
  • He drove carefully.
  • Even more, he drove extremely carefully.
  • So, he was an extremely careful driver.
  • Unfortunately, he still died in a horrible accident.

Adverbs
Adverbs are usually formed by adding -ly to the adjective-form.
  • careful > carefully
  • annoying > annoyingly
  • brilliant > brilliantly

However, there are some exemptions:
  • Adele is a good singer. > Adele sings well.

  • The test was hard. > He worked hard.
  • It was a high jump. > He had to jump high.
  • He has a fast car. > The car goes fast.
  • He gave a wrong answer. > He answered wrong.
  • He went to a far land. > He can jump far.

Adverbs
Adverbs can often be put in three different positions:

  • Front position: Normally, I go to school by bike.

  • Mid position: I normally go to school by bike. (before the main verb)
    I am normally never late. (after the verb be)
    I have always been a fan of this band. (after the first auxiliary verb).
    I would have happily stayed up until late (after the second auxiliary verb)

  • End position: He writes simply.

Usually put in mid position
  • always
  • never
  • adverbs of indefinite frequency (hardly ever, often, rarely, regularly, seldom)
  • degree adverbs (almost, hardly, nearly, quite, rather and scarcely)

  • constantly
  • continually
  • regularly
  • absolutely
  • completely
  • entirely
  • greatly
  • perfectly

  • adverbs of time or frequency consisting of one or more word (as a rule, from time to time, every so often, etc.)

  • adverbs of place (upstairs, next door, etc.)
  • adverbs of definite time and frequency (this month, last January, etc.)
