How was the Republic governed?
Also not every province had an equal vote in the States General. A richer province had more influence. This is why Holland had the most influence at that time. 

In 1586 Johan van Oldernbarnevelt became grand pensionary (raadspensionaris). He was the most powerful ma in the Republic.

Political power was in the hands of the provinces and the States General. Also the stadtholder must listen to them. 

Stadtholder Maurice of Orange and Oldernbarnevelt did not agree about the war with Spain. OB wanted to end the war asap because of the expenses.

War with Spain
After the Twelve Years' Truce the war against Spain continued in 1621. 

The Dutch destroyed Spanish ships that carried silver. Spain was also in war with France (& more)and needed the income of silver. 
Spain was forced to start peace negotiations.

In 1585 the Spanish closed of all waterways to the city of Antwerp which they had conquered. This caused many merchents to flee to Amsterdam. 

The arrival of these merchents caused Amsterdam to grow into the world's most important commercial centre.

small Dutch companies started sailing to the East Indies, however they had to compete with a lot of other Dutch companies and the lowered their prices to sell their goods. 

In 1602 the States General dicided to join all the small companies into one big one: The Dutch East India Company, the VOC. The VOC had a monopoly in the trade with East India.

Coen also came up with the Intra-Asian trade. The VOC exchanged goods with Japan for silver and copper. These metals were payment for the textiles and silk in India. 

Later these goods (textile and silk) were traded for spices in the East Indies of brought back to the Republic to be sold there.
