Terugblik: Simple & compound sentences

Simple sentence

• 1 onderwerp en 1 persoonsvorm

• example: He works at a supermarket.

Compound sentence

• 2 simple sentences samenvoegt met de voegworden: but, or, and, so.  Ezelsbruggetje: BOAS
• example: He works at a supermarket and He works at a carwash.
• They like dogs, but they are allergic to them.

Terugblik: Simple & compound sentences

• If I won a million euros, I would donate some money to charity. I would also buy a house for myself and my parents, and travel to explore new places and create lasting memories. If I had to choose a few travel destinations, I would choose destinations like the Maldives or the beautiful islands of Thailand, where I can snorkel and swim.

Zero Conditional

Wanneer gebruiken we de zero conditional?

Hoe gebruiken we de zero conditional? 

  Zero conditional: wanneer en hoe?

> Wordt gebruikt voor dingen die altijd waar zijn, dus feiten.

If zinsdeel   -     hoofd zin

Present simple    -    present simple 

Bijvoorbeeld: If it rains, you get wet.

          Plants die if they don't get enough water.

First conditional: wanneer en hoe? 

> Wordt gebruikt als het best waarschijnlijk is dat iets gaat gebeuren/voorspelling.

If zinsdeel     -      hoofd zin

    Present simple      -    will + hele ww

Bijvoorbeeld:

  My cat will stop meowing, if I feed it.

If it doesn't rain tomorrow, we will go on a picnic.

If Bob leaves school, we will be sad.

Zero & first conditional

1. If I have time this weekend, I _______ my room. (tidy)

2. Sandra will go to the party tonight, if she _____ today. (study) 

3. If it ___ (snow), the roads ____ (get) icy.

Answers:

1. will tidy
2. studies
3. snows, get

Second conditional: wanneer en hoe?

> Wordt gebruikt als het niet waarschijnlijk is dat iets gaat gebeuren/ verzonnen of niet echt.

If zinsdeel         -       hoofd zin

              Past simple      -      would + hele werkwoord

Bijvoorbeeld: If i had a dog, I would be happy.

I would buy a big house, if I won a lot of money.

Verschil tussen 1st and 2nd conditional:

First conditional: If I have enough money, I'll buy some new shoes.

De kans dat je dit zegt en genoeg geld bij elkaar weet te sparen is groot of groter dan bij de second conditional.

Second conditional: If I had enough money I would buy a house with twenty bedrooms and a swimming pool.

Waarschijnlijk ga ik nooit zoveel geld krijgen dus dit is maar een droomscenario of fantasie, dus niet echt!

Answers:

1.  Het is onwaarschijnlijk/ verzonnen. (2nd conditional)
2. Het is zeker waar en dus een feit. (zero conditional)
3. een voorspelling/ Iets wat best waarschijnlijk  kan gebeuren. (1st conditional)
