Acropolis
The acropolis (higher city) was the center of the city. It was a fortified hill.
Temple
The temple was very important to the Greeks. Like the Egyptians, the Greeks thought that the gods had an influence on daily life and so they had to be kept happy.
Agora
The agora was the market square. Here citizens could meet to talk about governance and the merchants could trade.
City
A city often grew around the acropolis. Many people came to live here because of trade and security.
Countryside
Many people lived in the city, but most people were still farmers and lived in the countryside.
Port
The Greeks were traders. Much trade was done by sea and almost every city had a port.
City wall
There was a lot of war going on in the time of the Greeks. So many cities built a city wall to protect the city and citizens.
