What is a Still life?

Slide 2 - Open vraag

'A still life is an image of a collection of inanimate objects.
This could be a drawing, painting or photo of, for example, a table with crockery and flowers.
These objects often have their own symbolism.
Still lifes come in different types, all with their own symbolism.

Slide 10 - Quizvraag

Composition is an important art element in a still life. What is composition?

Slide 11 - Open vraag

When making a still life, it is important that you put the objects together nicely, and then capture it with a photo, drawing or painting.
We call this a composition. The objects in the picture above have been put together better than the picture on the right.
Why?'

Composition assignment
'In the Piccolage app you are going to add 4 objects via' Photos From Web ', but you can also take 4 photos of simple objects yourself. By double clicking on the photo, you will see a menu. Select "Clip Photo" to cut out the picture as precisely as possible. Do that with four objects. You can then move these four objects in such a way that you put them together to create a composition.
But when do you have a nice composition and when not? You can try that out yourself first.
Make one good and one bad composition with the 4 objects.

How did they make the objects spatial?

Slide 18 - Woordweb

Shadow
The photo shows 3 basic spatial shapes: a cube, a sphere and a cone. All three are white in color. You can see that they are spatial through the shadows.
The shadow on the object itself is called own shadow.
We call the shadow on the surface or on another object
cast shadow.
You can clearly see the difference in the shade of round objects and angular objects.
With round objects such as the sphere and the cone, the shadow slowly fades from light to dark. This is what you call gradual tone transition.
With shapes such as a cube and a beam you see a clear difference between one surface and the other. You call this sharp tone limitation

Time for the final assignment! '

Slide 25 - Tekstslide

Still life
Assignment:
1) Put some (at least 3) objects together. Look for objects of different heights and (base) shapes. Put them in a good composition by overlapping the shapes.

2) Find out which basic shapes are in your objects and first make two sketches in pencil lines with hb pencil on an A4 sheet. (divide your A4 sheet in half with a pencil line.)

3) Then choose the most beautiful sketch to work on a new A4 sheet. First, gently put the lines on. Then elaborate further with shadow. '

Watch the video on drawing with pencil.
