Defining relative clauses

Bijzinnen met onmisbare informatie:

• Staan in het midden/einde van de zin
• Je gebruikt geen komma's!

He is the doctor who helped my grandmother.

This is the airport where I lost my bag.

Non-defining relative clauses

Soms geeft een bijzin alleen extra informatie

• Staan in het midden van de zin
• Begint en eindigt met een komma
• Je mag GEEN "that" in plaats van "which"gebruiken
  

The Times, which is published in London, is a daily newspaper.

The Times is a daily newspaper.

RELATIVE CLAUSES

THAT: bij personen, dieren en dingen (maar niet na een komma!)

Baking is something that I like to do the most.

My mum is the person that always supports me.
 WHOM: bij mensen na een voorzetsel

The writer, about whom I read, is really good.

WHOSE: bij bezit (van wie/wiens)

The man, whose wallet got lost, has found it back again.

RELATIVE CLAUSES

IMPORTANT:

WHO: bij mensen: 

Julie, who is my best friend, is going to move.

WHICH: bij dieren en dingen

Bruno, which is my neigbour's dog, has run away.

RELATIVE CLAUSES

Soms is de bijzin noodzakelijk om te begrijpen over wie of wat de zin gaat. In zo'n bijzin kun je who, which of that vaak weglaten

This is the book (that) I told you about.

Having fun is something (which) I can't live without.

What is a relative clause?

Een betrekkelijke bijzin. 

Deze gebruik je als je extra info over iets of iemand wilt geven. 

Bijvoorbeeld:

Die laptop, die op tafel staat, is van de docent.
