-  Lyrics: Where the Wild Roses Grow + My tears ricochet

- Novel: THUG

- (VWO-level + Klara and the Sun)

- Literary Terms

- You are not allowed to use a dictionary

- You can answer in Dutch or English

- Read the question carefully and be as complete as possible in     your answers. Give an elaborate explanation if the question           asks you to.

The following questions can basically be applied to all short stories, lyrics and the novel.

Question 1 (2 points)
Name two examples of setting and explain why they are important for the plot of the story 'The Chapel'.

- Place: The chapel is the place where Ginnie visits to see Father Olive who turns out to be the father of her baby at the end of the story.

- Place: The empty and lonely road at the beginning of the short story is important for the plot because this is where Ravi meets Ginnie and decides to take her to a secluded place to rape her.

- Time: the fact that Ginnie is six weeks overdue indicates that her baby can't be Ravi's

- Time: the Tuesday the Moorpalani boys chose for their outing and the exact time gives hints that sth is about to happen.

Question 2 (2 points)
George seemed to have grown as bored with the conversation as I had. He’d been lying on the grass with the bone propped between his forepaws, gnawing on it. Now he stood up, took a firmer grip with his teeth, shook himself, and trotted off toward the back fence.
How is George important in this story?

Where the wild roses grow?

"For her lips were the color of the roses

That grew down the river, all bloody and wild”

Is this an example of a flashback, flashforward or foreshadowing? Explain your answer

Foreshadowing. The use of 'bloody' hints at the fact that blood will be shed - and at the end we know that he has murdered her. 

Question 4 (2 points)
What is the point of view in the short story 'the Sniper'? Explain your answer.

The point of view is Third person limited omniscient. This is because we only know the sniper's thoughts and emotions; we don't learn anything about the other characters' thoughts/emotions. 

Question 5 (4 points)
Choose one of the following themes and explain why it could be seen as a theme of the novel THUG. Use two (2) examples from the novel to support your answer:
