Can you think of an example of a poetic device?

(Tools that poets use to create poems)

Poetic devices are essentially tools that a poet uses to create rhythm, enhance a poem's meaning.

Examples: Simile, Metaphor, Alliteration, Personification and onomatopoeia

Expected Learning Outcomes

Learners will be able to:

• Identify the difference between a simile, metaphor, personification and onomatopoeia
• Use these poetic devices in a poem

What is a simile?

Can you think of more examples of similes being used in songs?

Use a metaphor to describe your best friend.
Example : Xavi is an Einstein.

The baby was like an octopus, grabbing at all the cans on the shelve.

A) Write a Haiku about summer - using a simile

B) Write a Haiku about winter - using a metaphor.

Finally, devide an A4 page in equal parts. Write today's haiku in two parts and draw a picture matching each haiku. (This will be displayed)
