What do you know about hormones?
Slide 9 - Woordweb
Hormones
Chemical messengers that are secreted by hormone glands and transported with the blood. Therefore each hormone ends up everywhere in the body.
They connect to receptors on the cells of the target organ(s) and trigger a response.
Slide 10 - Tekstslide
Hormone gland
Blood
Target organ
Produce and secrete the hormone. Can be far from target organ. They always produce small amounts.
Blood travels throughout the entire body, therefore the hormones will end up everywhere.
The cells of the target organ have receptors the hormones can bind to and trigger a response
Example:
Pancreas produces insuline
Transported everywhere in the body
Mainly liver and muscle cells to stimulate the uptake of glucose
Slide 11 - Tekstslide
How come organs don't respond to all hormones that pass by with the blood?
Slide 12 - Open vraag
Milou: hormones are transported through the blood Rico: hormones pass on signals, because they connect to the cell membrane of certain cells Who is right?
A
Milou
B
Rico
C
Both
D
Neither
Slide 13 - Quizvraag
Male hormone cycle
Slide 14 - Tekstslide
Negative feedback
The hormone that is produced inhibits (decreases) its own production.
This creates a balance in hormone levels.
Testosterone inhibits the hypothalamus and pituitary gland which slows down its own production
Slide 15 - Tekstslide
Which hormone(s) is/are produced in this organ?
A
progesterone
B
testosterone
C
FSH and LH
D
FSH
Slide 16 - Quizvraag

A
FSH: spermatogenesis, LH: testosterone production
B
FSH: secondary sexual characteristics, LH: testosterone production
C
FSH: testosterone production, LH: spermatogenesis
