Learning goals
  • You can describe the structure of bone tissue and cartilage tissue.
  • You can describe how the composition of the bones changes during a person’s life.

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

What is not a function of the skeleton?
A
Gives support and gives shape
B
The skeleton helps us think
C
Protects organs
D
Helps is move together with muscles

Slide 4 - Quizvraag

The skeleton is a ...

A
Plantigrade - walks on the soles of the feet
B
digitigrade - walks on the toes
C
unguligrades - walks on hooves

Slide 6 - Quizvraag

Bones and cartilage
The skeleton consists out of 2 types of tissue:
Bone (bot) and cartilage (kraakbeen)

But..
What are bones made of?

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

Structure of bones
Bones exist out of calcium phosphate (=kalkzouten) and collagen (=lijmstof).

Calcium phosphate makes the bone strong and rigid.
Collagen makes the bone flexible

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Changes of bone tissue
The skeleton of a baby consists mostly of cartilage tissue.
During growth, most of the cartilage changes to bone.

When you get older:
--> Amount of collages decreases
--> amount of calcium phosphate increases.

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

baby is flexible because they have a lot of collagen in their bones
Old people break bones easier because they have less collagen.

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

Where do bones exist of?
A
Collagen and calcium phosphate
B
Cartilage and calcium phosphate
C
cartilage
D
collagen

Slide 12 - Quizvraag

Do the bones of older people have more collagen?
A
yes
B
no

Slide 13 - Quizvraag

Do the bones of baby's have more calcium phosphate?
A
yes
B
no

Slide 14 - Quizvraag

Demo practicum
We are going to look at the collagen and calcium phosphate in bones.
