Definition

A temple is a building or space in or where religious gatherings take place. Here a person can 'get in touch' with her or his god(s) and worship them. The ancient Sumerian word for temple means waiting room (the seat where the deity can reside).

Definition (2) 

The origin of the templum probably lies with the Etruscan Augurs. 

These marked out with their staffs a space in the heavens and on earth in which they observed the flight of the birds. This space was called templum.

Greeks versus Romans 

Both the Greeks and the Romans built temples

for their gods. 

Initially made of wood and other natural products. Later the buildings were made of stone.

Look at the Greek and Roman temples on the next slide and name the similarities and differences.

Timpaan = de driehoek in de gevel.

Zuilen = de hoge pilaren.

Kapiteel = de deksteen op een zuil.

Architraaf = deze balk zit onder de fries.

Voetstuk = op deze steen staat een zuil.

Trap = hierlangs ging je de tempel in.
