What is a prefix?

- You know what prefixes and suffixes are.

- You can correctly form and use prefixes and suffixes in an exercise. 

- You've expanded your vocabulary.

Example A: Don't get me wrong, I like the idea that people want to visit my city. It's just that I absolutely dislike all the mess they leave behind.

Example B: He is our intern. He is doing his internship at this company. 

Ask SS to read these 2 examples and what the differences are

like-dislike (dis- = not/the opposite)

play-replay (re- = again/back)

Prefixes

Letters you place BEFORE a word.

They change the meaning of the word.

Examples: 

non- /un-/ im-/ il-/ in-/ ir-/ dis-

re-

mis-            

These prefixes all mean 'not' or 'the opposite'

non-             sense -> nonsense

un-               used -> unused

im-               possible -> impossible

il-                  legal -> illegal

in-                compatible -> incompatible

ir-                 responsible -> irresponsible

dis-             appear -> disappear

Re- means 'again', or 'back'

act -> react

play -> replay

turn -> return

do -> redo

mis- means 'wrong' or 'not'

place -> misplace

understand -> misunderstand

Suffixes

Letters that go AFTER a word. They change the meaning of a word.

Examples:

-ment -> agreement

-tion -> celebration

-ness -> loneliness

- ing -> painting

- ful -> meaningful

-less -> hopeless

-ous ->dangerous

-ed -> learned

Suffixes

To talk about 'the person that does the action', add -er 

teach -> teacher

rap -> rapper

Suffixes

To change a verb into a noun, you add -ing/ -ment

move -> movement

paint -> painting

Suffixes

To change an adverb or an adjective into a noun, you add -ness

friendly -> friendliness

sad -> sadness
