SE Speaking - text 2
 Sensitivity: sensible or senseless?

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

Sensitivity:
sensible or senseless?
Have you heard about the changes made to children's books by Roald Dahl?

Let's watch the following clip first to see what it's all about!

Slide 7 - Video

Alquin - Sensitivity: sensible or senseless?
Why would the publisher have wanted to change the following sentences, do you think?

"Don't be foolish," my grandmother said. "You can't go round pulling the hair of every lady you meet, even if she is wearing gloves. Just you try it and see what happens."

In pairs or groups of 3, discuss the
following questions:
1. How is the work of the publishers at Puffin presented differently in paragraphs 1 and 2?
2. a. To which term in paragraph 2 do 'weight, mental health, violence, gender and race' (line 24) relate?
2. b. What does this term mean?
3. Which two things is the example of Mike Teavee (line 112) meant to illustrate?
4. Based on what you have read so far, has the Roald Dahl Story Company managed to adhere to their 'guiding principle' (line 130)?
5. Explain in your own words what primary school teacher Scott Evans means by making sure characters and content are 'mischievous and not malicious' (line 168).
6. According to biographer Matthew Dennison (line 170), which aspect of his writing did Dahl not want to be edited?

Suggested answers:
1. In paragraph 1 it's positive and ‘caring’ from the publisher’s point of view. The emphasis is on the fact that they want to make sure all readers can still enjoy books that were written many years ago. Paragraph 2 is more critical of the impact of the many changes the publisher has made. The authors sound a little shocked and make the publisher sound ruthless.

2. Sensibilities; this means all of the things that people are sensitive about in modern society.

3. The example of Mike Teavee is meant to show that
- Quentin Blake’s illustrations have also been scrapped or altered because of the sensitivity reading.
- It is not considered appropriate for a child to have guns (toy pistols).

Suggested answers:
4. Personal opinion. The Roald Dahl Story Company’s guiding principle is to maintain the characters, storyline and irreverence of Dahl’s work. Based on the examples given I don’t think they have succeeded because they have taken a lot of the fun and naughtiness out of Dahl’s books.

5. Scott Evans means that it’s important not to lose the rebellious spark that makes Dahl’s work appealing, but equally important not to be nasty or offend others.

6. According to Matthew Dennison Dahl did not want the individuality of the language and slang of his own childhood and schooldays to be edited.
