Life in the countryside

- Most people lived here 

- Farmers owned their own land 

- During war farmers had to sign up for the army

- Captured slaves returned to do farm work 

- Most land was eventually owned by landowners

Life in the city

The empire had some really large cities

People moved to the city if they had a hard time 

Proletarians: poor city dwellers 

The wealthy people helped the poor, but only if they gave political support 

Trade was needed to make sure cities had enough food
