After the Enlightenment the ideas of the French revolution were reversed. Kings were put back on their thrones. 

William Frederick of Orange wanted nothing more than to take the throne and be the ruler of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. 

In March 1815 he was crowned King Wiliam I.

In 1840 William II becomes king. He was a conservative

Out of fear for a revolution, William signed the new constitution in 1848. This changed his position as king. Governing the country was now the responsibility of the Second Chamber. 

It was not yet a democracy! Only rich men could vote.
