Lesson Goal

• the difference between countable and uncountable nouns
• the effect they have on other words in a sentence
• how English nouns are dealing with gender

Imporant because:

you can use the techniques in your letters and essays (Part of the 5H PTA). 

common noun - 

 a word such as table, cat or sea, that refers to an object or a thing but is not the name of a particular person, place or thing

collective noun - 

a singular noun, such as committee or team, that refers to a group of people, animals or things and, in

proper noun - 

The name of a particular person, place or thing

abstract noun - 

a noun, for example goodness or freedom, that refers to an idea or a general quality, not to a physical object

Name the nouns

Female/Male/Neuter

Some words are similar for both females and males

• baby, dancer, relative 

Some words are different, the female word gets an appendix

• Actor - Actress
• Heir - Heiress
  
• Hero - Heroine 

Female/Male/Neuter

Some words are completely different:

• bull  - cow
• cock - hen
• bachelor - spinster
• king -  queen

Personal pronouns

In general:

Only people and pets are referred to as 'he, his, him, she, her'

All other stuff: it, its

Exception: boats and cars are sometimes referred to as 'she' or 'her' especially when their owner is fond of them!

Countries: in writing often 'she'.

The Tesla initially beat the Elise around the Top Gear track. Clarkson, who described "brown rice eco cars" as a "bit like cod liver oil – very good for you but you would rather have a plate of steak and chips", was impressed as it beat its rival from a standing start.
