Selective listening
In real life situations, you usually don’t listen to everything that is being said around you. You ignore some information and focus on the rest.

  • Scanning: You listen for the information you need and ignore the rest.
  • Focusing your attention: It saves you energy and focuses on what is relevant.

What did we learn about the hydraulic system?

Slide 15 - Woordweb

Exercise 1: Listening
Before you start a listening exercise always:
  • Read the questions
  • Think about what you already know about the subject

We are going to listen to an explanation of how the pneumatic system works:
  1. Go to www.edpuzzle.com
  2. Log in with your own name and password
  3. Click on join class and log in with the code the teacher will give you
  4. Pay attention: Answer the questions
  5. Watch the video called: β€˜ATPL Training Airframes Systems 6 – Hydraulics – Basic Hydraulic system
  6. Done? Name the components of exercise 3 & 4

Slide 16 - Tekstslide

Slide 17 - Link

Exercise 1: Answers
1. What is the Bramah press?
A passive hydraulic system

2. What are the two types of active hydraulic systems which are used in an aircraft?
The open-center system and the closed system

3. What are the six components that are used in the hydraulic systems?
A reservoir of oil, pump, selector or control valves, actuator, filters, and a relief valve.

Slide 18 - Tekstslide

Exercise 1: Answers
4. What is a disadvantage of the open-center hydraulic system?
Only one service can be operated at a time.

5. What happens if you select a user system of the hydraulic system?
The selector valve will open, and the hydraulic fluid will be directed to an actuator, which will move.

6. What kind of components will be powered by an open-center hydraulic system?
Landing gear and flaps, because they only need to be powered for a short amount of time during each flight.

Slide 19 - Tekstslide

Exercise 1: Answers
7. What is the great advantage of the closed hydraulic system?
Multiple services can be operated at the same time.

8. What is the function of the automatic cut out valve?
To divert pump output to the reservoir and to prevent overloading the pump.

9. What are two important differences between the open-center and closed hydraulic system?
Two or more services can be operated at the same time with a closed hydraulic system (while only one service can be operated with an open-center hydraulic system)
It is not so important to return the selector valve to neutral once the operation is complete. In a closed hydraulic system,  the pump control system deals with the consequent pressure increase.

Slide 20 - Tekstslide

Exercise 1: Answers
10. What is a hydraulic lock?
The fluid is locked-in on both sides of the actuator, consequently because the fluid is incompressible the actuator will not be able to produce any on-demand movement.

11. What does a hydraulic power pack consist of?
An electrical driven pump, a pressure operated switch, a reservoir, and an accumulator.

Slide 21 - Tekstslide

Exercise 3 & 4
Can you name all the different parts of the hydraulic system after having watched the video?

Do you also know what kind of components the hydraulic system services?
  • Make exercise 3 and exercise 4
