Text #1:
Find the word
'enema'. Put your hand up when you find it.
1 One hot evening in Padua they carried him up onto the roof and he could look out over the top 2 of the town. There were chimney swifts in the sky. After a while it got dark and the searchlights 3 came out. The others went down and took the bottles with them. He and Luz could hear them  4 below on the balcony. Luz sat on the bed. She was cool and fresh in the hot night.
5 Luz stayed on night duty for three months. They were glad to let her. When they operated on
6 him she prepared him for the operating table; and they had a joke about friend or enema. He
7 went under the anaesthetic holding tight on to himself so he would not blab about anything
8 during the silly, talky time. After he got on crutches he used to take the temperatures so Luz    9 would not have to get up from the bed. There were only a few patients, and they all knew about 10 it. They all liked Luz. As he walked back along the halls he thought of Luz in his bed.

Text 2: What could the title of the text be?
A man named Randy liked to hunt trees. He looked for big trees and old trees. He made maps to show where these trees were. He did not want to cut them down. He wanted people to take care of them.

Randy was told of a very tall tree on Vancouver Island. The tree was said to be 314 feet tall. That would make it the tallest tree in Canada. Randy set out to find the tree.

But someone else found it first. It was found by a logger. Loggers wanted to cut down Canada’s tallest tree and all the trees around it.

Randy made a path in the forest so people could see the tall tree. The tree was so big and beautiful it would fill them with awe. More and more people wanted to save that forest. Thanks to these people, that forest is now a park. Canada’s tallest tree is still there.

There may still be a bigger tree out there. Maybe you will find it. But there are only a few old forests left in Canada. Many are still at risk of being cut down.

Reading strategies
We use strategies while reading to make it easier and less time consuming to answer questions about texts.
Skimming and scanning are two reading strategies.

TODAY:
1. Get the print outs and do the assignment
Really analyse the text!
TAKE YOUR TIME!
- Highlight where in the text you have found the answer
- When you choose an answer (for example B: show where in the text it says that...) also explain why other answers aren't correct...
2. WB: pg. 258: text 1, 2, 3, 4

Lesson: Inference

Slide 24 - Tekstslide

Deze slide heeft geen instructies

INFERENCE
We use inferences already in our daily life.

Just look at instagram:
What can we say based on the photo evidence about this person?

Slide 25 - Tekstslide

Ask the students what they can notice about this person from the photo? What are her interests?
ONLY based on the evidence.
She likes make up, chocolate, food, fashion...
What is an inference in reading?

- a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence, clues and reasoning
- the answers aren't always there black on white, you have to get it from clues and evidence from the text
- we use prior/background knowledge

Slide 26 - Tekstslide

We do the same in reading.
Sometimes things aren't specifically mentioned but we can see from the clues and evidence an extra information that is not explicitely stated.
Example

Practice => How could you explain this riddle:
There is a pipe, a carrot and a pile of pebbles together in the middle of a field.
How come?

Slide 28 - Open vraag

In order to figure this out you had to previously in your life have made a snowman. Based on that background knowledge you were able to connect the dots that there used to be a snowman there.
Explain the riddle:
Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice all live in the same house. Bob and Carol
go out to a movie, and when they return, Alice is lying dead on the floor in a
puddle of water and glass. It is obvious that Ted killed her but Ted is not
prosecuted or severely punished.

Group work: WHO KIDNAPPED THE PRINCIPAL.doc
- Get in groups of 3-5 (7 groups max!)
- Do the assignment: Who kidnapped the principal?
- Talk to each other and try to find out based on the clues
- You have to use evidence and clues (inference) to complete the assignment
