Keeping animals
  • After people started to grow food another change appeared. 
  • Around 6000 BC, people learned to tame animals. This is called domestication.
  • Because of the agricultural surplus people in villages needed to find a way to store food.
  • Pottery became became important.

Irrigation
  • Around 3000 BC the first farmers emerged in Egypt.
  •  There was almost no rain, but there were farmers..
  • In the summer the Nile overflows.
  • Fertile silt (clay) stayed behind.
  • Farmers build canals and pools to catch water. This is called irrigation.

A change in society.
  • There was more food because of the farmers who used irrigation.
  • So not eveyone had to be a farmer anymore.
  •  Craftsmen  specialised in other jobs, like carpenter, shoemaker or potter.
  • These craftsmen traded their products for food.
  • Some peolpe became so good at trading that they became merchants.

Mighty pharaohs.
  • Merchants and craftsmen started to live together. And so villages grew into cities.
  • The cities were united under a government.
  • The head of the government was the pharaoh
  • The pharaoh had the task to make rules and laws, but he was also an important religious person.
