Youth: seems upper-class
(private tutor, Cambridge, hunting, cricket, socializing, writing)

Enlisted in 1914 (28), officer training

Desperate to be at the front

Writing becomes darker
As an officer, he was brave and inspired his men. He is awarded the Military Cross.

Gets wounded and spends time in an officers' hospital. When he goes back to France, he becomes more reckless.

A friend mentions mental problems

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

What happens afterwards?

After getting wounded a second time, Sassoon writes an open letter which is published in The Times, protesting against the war.

This act  could have been considered treason, but he avoids punishment and is sent to a mental hospital in Scotland instead, to be treated for shell shock.

After the war, he continues to write both prose and poetry. He dies in 1967.
