Consider the following sentences 

What do they have in common?

1. The bike was stolen.

2. The winner was chosen by the jury.

3. The tree was planted by the gardener.

The bike was stolen.
The winner was chosen by the jury.
The tree was planted by the gardener.

1. The object of an action is the subject.
2. The subject couldn't do anything about it.
3. The sentences are ungrammatical
4. This is an old way of writing, not used anymore

The object of an action is the subject?

In other words: whoever or whatever is performing the action (doing it) is not the (grammatical) subject of the sentence.

= the passive voice

Write down the passive version of this active sentence:
Yesterday, I bought a book.

Why bother?

> it's nice and clear sometimes (and a bit fancy, we like that)

> scientific writing

> emphasis on the object

Important now:

He played a game --> a game was played (by him)

He has played a game --> a game has been played 

He had played --> had been played

 He will play -->  will be played

However.... perhaps you can just trust your gut feeling
