• to know the difference between different sentences with 'if.....'
• to be able to use these sentences in different situations

Conditional

Een zin waar een voorwaarde word genoemd (condition) voor een resultaat. Een zogenoemde "if"-zin

bijv.  ALS de zon schijnt, smelt het ijs / het ijs smelt ALS de zon schijnt
--> IF the sun shines, the ice melts / The ice melts,IF the sun shines

Bestaat altijd uit 2 delen: IF (voorwaarde) en het resultaat. Deze 2 delen kunnen omgedraaid zijn.

'If' zinnen - 4 soorten:

• 0: feiten en algemene waarheden - If water reaches 100 degrees, it boils.
• 1: echte of waarschijnlijke situaties - If a soldier kills the ogre, he will be named champion.
• 2: onwaarschijnlijke en hypothetische situaties  - If I won the lottery, I would go travelling around the world.
• 3: situaties die je niet meer kunt veranderen- If I had studied for the test, I would have passed. (But I didn't study, so I didn't pass.)

Let op!

 'to be' in een 2nd conditional zin wordt 'were' niet 'was' als je advies geeft: 

"If I were you, I would talk to a teacher."

Giving advice / imagining situations:

Situations that you cannot change anymore:
