Aim of this lesson: At the end of this lesson I can use the modal verbs: can could, should and have to correctly in a sentence.

Je gebruikt can om te praten over

• wat mogelijk is
• wat mensen, dieren en dingen kunnen doen (en niet kunnen doen)
• toestemming

- Stress can cause health problems.

Could 

You use could to talk about,

• wat mensen, dieren en dingen konden doen in het verleden
• toestemming in het verleden
•  wat mogelijk is in de toekomst

- Could you read when you were 5 years old?

- Stop it! Someone could get hurt.

- We couldn't go outside after 8 pm.

- She could cycle to school instead of taking the bus.

Je gebruikt should om advies te geven:

- You should eat something.

- Should we leave early?

Je gebruikt have to om te praten over verplichtingen: er is geen keuze, je moet het doen

- We have to fill out this form first.

Je kan not gebruiken met have to om te zeggen dat er geen verplichting is: er is een keuze.
