Hormones
= regulatory substances, produced in hormone glands (hormoonklieren).
Pituitary gland (hypofyse)
= an important hormone glad at the base of the brain.
Target organs
= respond to hormones

Receptors
= structures with different unique shapes inside the cell membrane of each body cell.
Recieve signals from hormones and put cells to work.

makes your body grow!

Pituitary gland
: releases the growth hormone into the bloodstream.
These hormones are transported to various body cells all over the body.
The bone cells respond to the message of this growth hormone: they start dividing more quickly.
The cells increase in size, which is called
cell growth
. When they reach a certain size, these cells are able to divide again.

Growth stops when growth plates (groeischrijven) ossify (verkalken).
