Lesson 2.4 - Naming Ionic Bonds

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

             Learning Intention:

What? We are learning  how to write the names and chemical formulas for ionic bonds.
Why?  In order to  use the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) nomenclature correctly.
             Success Criteria

I can:
- Identify the properties of ionic bonds.
-Develop formulas for ionic bonds
- Identify the IUPAC nomenclature for ionic bonds when given an ionic compound formula.

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC)

The world authority on chemical nomenclature and terminology, including the naming of new elements in the periodic table; on standardized methods for measurement; and on atomic weights, and many other critically-evaluated data.

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

Naming Ionic Bonds:
Formula
Name of Ionic Compound
AlCl
3
Aluminum chloride
1st element: stays the same name
2nd element:
    -  becomes lower case
    -  add "-ide" suffix means negative
    - Subscripts not needed in Name

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

Example:
Write the IUPAC nomenclature for K  P
3

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

Example:
Write the IUPAC nomenclature for K  P
3
K = Potassium
p = Phosphorus

Potassium phosphorus

ide
Potassium Phosphide

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

  Writing Formulas for Ionic Compounds
Magnesium     nitride

(when given the name)

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

  Writing Formulas for Ionic Compounds
SHORT CUT
Magnesium     nitride

(when given the name)
1. Write the Symbols
2. Write the Ion Charges
3. Cross over the charges .
4. Remove the charge SIGNS
5. Simplify if possible.

What does this REALLY mean?
3 Mg     = +6
2 N        = -6

Subscript:  small number written at the bottom right of the element symbol. Tells the number of atoms in the compound(molecule).
Combining Element Symbols in a Compound:
1st letter of a symbol is Upper case. 2nd letter of a symbol is Lower Case.

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

Example:
What is the formula for the compound that forms between magnesium and phosphorous?

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

Example:
What is the formula for the compound that forms between magnesium and phosphorous?
                                                   Mg      P
                                               Mg      P

To form a compound with NO charge,
3 Mg    is needed = +6
2 P       is needed = -6
