In het Engels wordt de gerund gevormd door het werkwoord + -ing. Het is een speciale vorm die wordt gebruikt om te praten over activiteiten, handelingen of dingen die nu aan de gang zijn.

Bijvoorbeeld:

"Lezen" (to read) wordt "reading" (het lezen).

"Schrijven" (to write) wordt "writing" (het schrijven).

We gebruiken de gerund in verschillende situaties, zoals:

• Als onderwerp van de zin:

"Reading is mijn favoriete hobby." (Lezen is mijn favoriete hobby.)

• Na voorzetsels:

"I am good at swimming." (Ik ben goed in zwemmen.)

• Na bepaalde werkwoorden:

"She enjoys dancing." (Zij houdt van dansen.)

• Bij sommige werkwoorden die gaan over gevoelens:

"I like singing." (Ik hou van zingen.)
