Why is 'I was at the park yesterday’ correct?

Change the sentence onto a sentence about yesterday: ‘She is at home now’
(Interpunction!)

For a plural subject, like in the sentence ‘They ___ excited about the game’, should you use ‘was’ or ‘were’? Explain your answer.
