Trench war
On the
Western
front
the armies of the
Central Powers
were just as strong as the
Allies.
Non of them could gain the upper hand.
So the armies both dug in.
They made huge ditches which they fortified:
trenches.

The trenches were a complex system of ditches.

1917
Until 1917 not much changed. Both armies were losing soldiers, but no one could win.
In February 1917, the Russians signed a peace treaty with the Germans.
All the German troops were send out to the
Western front.
However, they could not make a difference because the Americans joinded the
Allies
in 1917.

Germany could go on fighting.
They were forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles.
Germany should pay for all damage;
war reparations.
Germany couldn't have a large army.
Germany had to give up land.

The Tsar of Russia was an absolute monarch.
There was a great inequality in Russia.
Most people were poor and had no possesions. They worked for landlords on the fields.
