Active voice

An active sentence is a sentence where the subject performs the action of the verb.

•MY GRANDFATHER BUILT THIS HOUSE IN 1934. 

•CARELESS DRIVERS CAUSE MANY ACCIDENTS. 

•THEY DIDN'T INVITE ME FOR THE PARTY. 

Word order  : Subject  – verb - direct object - indirect object

Passive voice

In a passive sentence, the action of the main verb is done to the subject. 

It's less  important who performs the action. Mainly used in reports, newspapers.

To indicate who performs the action 'by' is used.

• THIS HOUSE WAS BUILT BY MY FATHER.
• MANY ACCIDENTS ARE CAUSED BY CARELESS DRIVERS.
• I WASN’T INVITED TO THE PARTY BY THEM.

Form of the passive

 TO BE + PAST PARTICIPLE

•SIMPLE PRESENT:  AM - IS - ARE + PAST PARTICIPLE (3E RIJ)

•ACTIVE- THEY SELL A LOT OF BOOKS EVERY YEAR.  >>  SELL

•PASSIVE - A LOT OF BOOKS ARE SOLD EVERY YEAR. >> ARE SOLD  

•IN DUTCH WE USE  "WORDEN EN ZIJN"
