We are going to play a little game called "Am I breaking the law?"

You will see a statement; read it

The question is: Am I breaking the law?

Here is an example.

Am I breaking the law?

Statement:

Mrs. Arts hits Joeri in the face.

Question:

Am I (the teacher in this case) breaking the law:

 yes or no? 

I am driving home in my car. I drive towards an intersection (kruispunt) and I turn left.

This sign means that you must go
straight ahead or turn right.

When crossing the street, you have to look both ways. If I don't....

It is not illegal to cross the street without looking both ways but you might be hit by a car (or worse).

You have to look both ways before crossing the street. 

I never drink water, I only drink Coca Cola.

Of course I won't be breaking the law by drinking only Coca Cola. But it's not very healthy. 

I should drink more water and less Coca Cola.

We use have to, must and should to talk about situations where in Dutch you would say "(zou) moeten".

Om aan te geven dat iets noodzakelijk is gebruik je have to of must. 

Welke gebruik je dan wanneer?

- Have/has to geeft vooral aan dat iets noodzakelijk is. 

                I have to leave now, or I'll miss my train.

- Must is formeler en dwingender. Wordt vaak gebruikt bij bevelen, regels of wetten. 

               You must leave the premises now. 

               

Should

Je gebruikt "should" om advies te geven, of om aan te geven dat iets (eigenlijk) zou moeten. 

Je vindt zelf dat iets zou moeten.

We should ask Billy if he wants to come.

You should drink more water.

Must - extra! 

Je gebruikt "must" ook om te zeggen dat is logisch is. Er staat dan iets in de zin wat je duidelijk maakt waarom je denkt dat dit zo is. 

You must be exhausted after that long swim

That dog must be really old, because it's muzzle is grey.
