The East Indies: history 
  • The VOC traded with the East Indies since the 17th century
  • The Dutch government establishes The Dutch East Indies in 1816.
  • The local people are subjected to a lot of violence to get them to listen to the Dutch government

  • To govern the D.E.I., a governor-general was appointed. 
  • He used a divide and rule tactic: a method of government where   you put groups against each other to prevent them from cooperating,   with the aim of making it easier for yourself to govern.

The Dutch East Indies: economic
One of the most imporant things for the Netherlands was making sure they were also making money from the colony. 
This lead to exploitation: to exploit the local people from the local resources. 

Example: cultivation system
Indonesian farmers had to use 20% of their ground for Dutch trade.

The cultivation system did not work out at all.  
  • It caused famines
  • It didn't make a lot of money

Effect: free labour 
Indonesian farmers now started working for Dutch entrepreneurs 
(=liberalism!)
