At the end of this lesson you know the difference between cardinal and ordinal numbers

and how to spell numbers.

Tells us how many there is /are of something.

Example: There are two girls.

Cardinal is for counting

Tells us the position of something in a list.

Example: Washington was the first president of the USA

Ordinal is for order of things

When to use ordinal numbers 

1. Dates (the first of April)
2. Sequence/order (I finished fourth.)
3. Floors of a building (He works on the 6th floor.) 
4. Celebrations: birthdays and anniversaries (It's her 17th birthday today.)
5. Centuries (He lived in the 15th century.)
6. Kings and Queens: Roman ordinals, but spoken in English (Richard IV = Richard the fourth)

Making ordinals up to 20: normally add -th after the cardinal number: eleventh, nineteenth (except 1, 2 and 3, 9, 12). Add -st, -nd ,-rd ,-th 

How do you write ordinal numbers?

De meeste rangtelwoorden in het Engels maak je door 'th' aan het getal toe te voegen. 

Example : 

Four -> Fourth

Seven -> Seventh

Ten -> Tenth

There are exceptions!

• One-first
• Two-second
• Three-third
• Five-fifth
• Eight-eighth
• Nine-ninth

• Twelve-twelfth
