What is AI?

AI stands for Artificial Intelligence. Generative language models like ChatGPT (part of OpenAI) learn from data and patterns, which allows them to become smarter over time. As a result, they can formulate answers to questions and adapt to the context of a conversation.

WHAT IS Maia IN LESSONUP?

At LessonUp, we have embedded a language model in our platform. Maia fulfills teacher-centred assignments based on your input. For example: you want a lesson on the subject of geography, the topic being 'environmental pollution', based on a specific learning objective? Additionally, you also want to activate your students' prior knowledge and encourage self-reflection at the end?
Write a short prompt (more about prompts later in this lesson plan), and LessonUp sends an assignment to Maia, your LessonUp AI assistant. It results in the creation of informative, interactive slides.

WHY use Maia TO CREATE A LESSON?

At LessonUp, our mission is to empower every teacher to create the most engaging, enjoyable,
and effective learning moments. This is challenging, which is why we want to make it easier for you.
Maia in LessonUp helps you in 3 different ways:

1. Lesson Suggestions:
Suppose you want to develop a digital version of a chapter from your textbook. You want it to be engaging and interactive, to activate and inspire students. With Maia you can enter the learning objective from your textbook as a prompt and ask her to create a lesson suggestion. In just 2 minutes, you'll have a solid foundation for your lesson.

2. Structure:
When you input your assignment, we have instructed Maia  (at the back end of the screen) to automatically create a lesson structure that follows a structured framework. The slides are organised within lesson phases: preparation, activating prior knowledge, instruction, and evaluation.

3. Pedagogy:
Maia is also designed to automatically incorporate a pedagogical framework into your lesson: each lesson states a clear learning objective, starts by activating students' prior knowledge, and ends with an exit ticket plenary to encourage self-reflection.

Maia primarily serves as an assistant; it can strengthen your teaching, not replace it.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Through the "+ Maia " button in My LessonUp, you begin the process of creating a framework for your lesson. We refer to it as a lesson framework because the created lesson is not ready-to-use. You can still add your own information and layout to the slides. In just 3 steps, you have a complete lesson framework.

1.a Write a prompt
Artificial Intelligence starts working for you when you clearly indicate what it should do. In computer language, it is called a prompt: the information you provide AI to make it do what you want. You can compare it to entering the right search terms in a search engine like Google. The more specific you are, the better the search results.

Example of a prompt:
"A lesson for the subject of geography, with the topic of climate change. By the end of the lesson, students should be aware of what they can do personally to combat climate change. A homework assignment should be part of the lesson." Learn more about writing prompts.

1.b Paste a text
The other option is to provide Maia with a lot of information, such as by copying an extensive (public) article. If you choose this option, Maia doesn’t add selected information as she does when you write a prompt. In this case she simply edits and rearranges the information (text) you provide her with.

1.c Upload an image
Upload one or more images to create a lesson framework. You could upload photos or screenshots of your notes, engaging articles, past exam papers, and more. Keep in mind that Maia only scans the textual part of the uploaded images.

2. Choose the lesson components:
After filling in the prompt, text or image Maia starts working for you. Now you will get an overview of the created lesson components. Deselect the lesson components you don't want in your lesson. You can also remove lesson components in a later moment.
3. Review and complete:
After choosing the lesson components, click on 'Create lesson.' And voilà! Your lesson framework is ready. Now, carefully review the information: Maia is still in the development phase, which means there might be errors. Add your own information to the lesson and apply an appropriate layout.
