  • Inversion (unit 16)
  • By cleft sentences
  • Use of auxiliary verbs
  • Other ways of emphasizing

Slide 11 - Slide

how you form cleft sentences
  • Use ‘only’ or ‘all’                                                                                                                            All I need is you
  • Start with a wh- (what, when, where, why) sentence.                                             What we need to do is help her
  •  Use ‘it’ + form of ‘be’                                                                                                                It was you who started the fight (not someone else)

Slide 12 - Slide

cleft sentences
  • In a cleft sentences a single message is divided (cleft) into two clauses.
  • Cleft sentences are used to focus on a particular part of the sentence and to emphasize a message.
  • Use of ‘an extra’ relative clause (a clause that says something about a noun), while a simple sentence is possible as well.
-  I sent a letter which arrived three weeks later.
- We went to dinner at this restaurant that I  really like.
- The only thing I need is you.

Slide 13 - Slide

cleft sentence
Can be used to emphasize the subject or the object (lijdend vw or meew. vw) of the sentence:
  • My brother cut down the apple tree
  • It was my brother who cut down the apple tree (emphasis on the brother)
  • It was the apple tree that my brother cut down (emphasis on the apple tree)

Slide 14 - Slide

auxiliary verb spoken English
Normally an auxiliary verb is not stressed
I am -> I’m
I will -> I’ll
She is -> she’s

Slide 15 - Slide

auxiliary verbs
When the verb is stressed it puts extra emphasis on the sentence:
I will go to work tomorrow, sick or not sick
I do want to go to the museum before the exhibition is closed.
You did go to the store today, didn’t you?

Slide 16 - Slide

other ways of emphasising
  • Adding ‘so’ and ‘such’           She is such a wonderful girl!
  • Intensifying adverbs               He is completely crazy!
