When do we use the past simple?
We use the past simple to talk about things that happened in the past.
For example:
  • I walked to school yesterday.
  • Last week we studied English.
  • A few months ago we talked about football.
=> yesterday last week a few months ago

How do we form the past simple?
Achter het werkwoord plaats je 'ed'.

I walk -> I walked
it rains-> it rained
they beg-> they begged
subject + infinitive without to + -ed

How do we form the past simple?
Als een werkwoord eindigt op -e, dan komt er in de past simple alleen een -d achter:
I live - I lived
you move - you moved

In de past simple wordt de laatste medeklinker verdubbeld als er één klinker voor staat:
I drop - I dropped
they plan - they planned

How do we form the past simple?
Als een werkwoord eindigt op -y, dan komt er in de past simple een -ied achter:
I carry- I carried
you study- you studied

In de past simple komt er een -ed achter als er een klinker voor staat:
I play - I played

How do we form the past simple?

Sommige werkwoorden zijn onregelmatig (= irregular) en dat betekent dat ze geen '-ed' krijgen maar hun eigen vorm hebben.

to write  -> wrote    I wrote her a letter last week.
to go       -> went      He went to Italy last year.
to make -> made     They made a very nice meal two days ago.

How do we form the past simple?
We plaatsen het woord 'did not' tussen het onderwerp en het werkwoord.
I lived - I did not live
you moved - you did not move
subject + did not + infinitive without to

Let op! Als de zin negatief is, hoeft het werkwoord niet meer vervoegd te worden.
