Wat doet een gebouw?

Waarin je les krijgt, uit het raam staart, vrienden maakt. Dat gebouw is niet zomaar uit de lucht komen vallen. Dat is door iemand bedacht. Misschien al lang geleden. Misschien minder lang geleden. Maar ooit was die school er nog niet. Er was alleen maar een architect, druk bezig met ontwerpen. Hoe moet die school eruit komen te zien? Hoe groot moeten de lokalen zijn? Moeten er hoge ramen in, zodat je zittend in de klas niet wordt afgeleid? Of moet er juist contact zijn met buiten? Moeten er hoekjes komen, waar je je rustig kunt terugtrekken? Of kies ik voor een open ruimte waarin iedereen elkaar ziet?

Dit zijn belangrijke keuzes. Ze beïnvloeden je gedrag. Ze maken dat je je veilig voelt in het schoolgebouw, of juist verloren. Dat je elkaar makkelijk tegenkomt of juist aan elkaar voorbij loopt. Het gebouw bepaalt in welke sfeer jij je dagen doorbrengt. Bouwen is niet zomaar stapelen. Bouwen is voorwaarden scheppen. Hoe bouw ik zo dat mensen zich hier fijn voelen?
