Identity
Identity is a key theme in the novel, as Sam struggles to define who he is beyond skateboarding and teenage expectations.

Teen Identity: Sam sees himself as a skater, but becoming a father challenges that self-image.

Masculinity and Responsibility: He battles between wanting to be a good dad and feeling too young for fatherhood.

Social Class & Expectations: Sam’s working-class background influences how he sees his future, making his accidental fatherhood even more overwhelming.

Imagery

Slide 8 - Mind map

Imagery
Imagery is the use of descriptive language to create vivid sensory experiences for the reader. Hornby uses imagery to bring Sam’s world to life, especially in his skateboarding scenes.

Example: "I hit the ramp at just the right speed, crouched, then felt the weightlessness as I lifted into the air. The world slowed down, and for a moment, I was flying."

Irony

Slide 10 - Mind map

Irony
Irony occurs when there is a contrast between expectation and reality. Slam uses situational irony to highlight Sam’s struggles with unexpected fatherhood.

Example: doesn't want to become anything like his mom have a child at a young age, yet he gets a child at a young age.

Metaphor

Slide 12 - Mind map

Metaphor
A metaphor is a direct comparison between two unrelated things to add deeper meaning.

Example: "Life was like skating—sometimes smooth, sometimes full of cracks, and every now and then, you hit the ground hard."
