Mankind and the world
"memento mori" -  remember that you will die 

- Mentality changed during the 16th century. A different view of mandkind and the world 

"carpe diem"  - seize the day

interest in antiquity 
- Italians discovered tha the Greeks and Romans in antiquity had the same mentality. 

- It seemed like teh antique culture had a rivival in around 1500: 
- Renaissance: Rebirth 
-They called the period between antiquity and their own time 'middle ages'

Humanists
- The scholars of the Renaissance did not put God or the gods at the centre. Instead they focused on human beings 

- The scholars were called Humanists.

- They studied art, classical philosophy and literature with a lot of attention to human beings.

Mistakes in the Bible 
Note!:  humanists were christians, but thought that people should not just do whatever the Church told tehm to do. They had to think for themselves. 

- Erasmus discovered that the Latin Bible was full of mistakes. So he made a new translation.

Renewal of art
- Art changed during the Renaissance 

- It had to look natural. But they made it even more beautiful than reality.  

- They learned how to you perspective (depth)

Spread
- The Renaissance started in Italian Cities such as Florence, Milan and Rome, but also became populair outside of Italy.

- Foreign monachs invited Italian artists and scholars to come and work for them. 
German and Dutch artists travelled to Italy to learn this new way of painting and sculpting (like Erasmus)

- The invention of printing!
