The Past Simple of "to be" and "to have"
When do we use the past simple?
To talk about things that happened in the past. 
          Present Simple: I am a student.  -> Past Simple: I was a student. 
          Present Simple: I have a bike. ->      Past Simple: I had a bike. 

                      Past simple of 'to be'
I         was late to class. 
You   were late to class.
He     was late to class.
She   was late to class.
It        was late to class.
We    were late to class. 
They were late to class.
                     Past simple of 'to have'

I         had a cat.
You   had a cat.
He     had a cat.
She   had a cat.
It        had a cat.
We     had a cat.
They  had a cat.

The Past Simple (Regular Verbs)
When do we use the past simple?
To talk about things that happened in the past. 
             My mom called me this morning.           call -> called

How to form the past simple?

1. Add an -ed to the end of the verb or just 'd' if the vowel already ends in an 'e'.
            play -> played                 look -> looked                climb -> climbed                  explore -> explored

2. Y Rule: y turns to i, except if the 'y' comes after a vowel (a,e,i,o,u)
            carry -> carried                hurry -> hurried         BUT         play -> played            

3. Double Rule: Consonant is doubled if it is right before a vowel.
            stop -> stopped               dot -> dotted            hop -> hopped

These are verbs that don't follow any sort of pattern. Some can be placed in categories below.
Form stays the same
Examples: cost, hurt, hit, let, put, beat
He hit the ball.                 He hurt his toe.             I already put that book away.
Consonant change
Examples: lend/lent, send/sent, build/built
He sent me three euros.                I lent him my watch so he wouldn't be late.           Rome wasn't built in a day.
Consonant added
Examples: feel/felt, leave/left, dream/dreamt, burn/burnt, sleep/slept, sell/sold, say/said
She said she would bring the peanut butter.         I left when she showed up empty handed.
-ought/-aught
Examples: bring/brought, think/thought, catch/caught, teach/taught
I thought she taught how to throw the ball well. I mean I brought my glove and caught my first ball!
Vowel change
Examples: -o   break/broke, speak/spoke, stand/stood, forget/forgot
-e   blow/blew, know/knew, fly/flew
-a   begin/began, drink/drank, swim/swam, sing/sang, come/came
