Adverbs &  short adverbs
Adverbs:  words added to an adjective/another adverb/verb or the entire sentence AND  that say sth. about how/when/why/how much etc.: often, always, soon, rarely, almost, nearly, unfortunately, extremely, jolly, etc.

Short adverbs:
a) one verb -> BEFORE verb (I always wanted a puppy)

b) two or more verbs -> AFTER FIRST verb (I can never really tell if you are angry or not)

c) to be -> AFTER all forms of to be (She is definitely over him.)

d) In questions -> after subject (Have you ever listened to me? Does she often go there?)

e) in front of adjective/another adverb -> (The weather is extremely bad. She plays jolly well.)

P/T at the beginning of the sentence for emphasis/stylistic effect. Not always possible!

  • Not possible in compound/complex sentences 
(coordinating or subordinating sentences/samengestelde zinnen en bijzinnen)
(compound/complex sentence = 2(or more) subjects/verbs)
 -> She said that they would meet in London tomorrow.

  • Not possible in questions

  • Not possible when adverb modifies adjective
